IT Survival Guide by David Papp

IT Survival GuideIT Survival Guide by David Papp provides an overview on how to manage technology within your company.  He acknowledges that much of the work done in the technology field tends to be “putting out fires” and offers guidelines for getting away from that way of working.

To conquer technology in your organization, it’s important to first assess your current infrastructure and understand what you already have in place.  He stresses the importance of documenting everything which includes actual equipment as well as current procedures.  Papp also gives an overview of common equipment one might find in a server room such as  virtualized servers, switches, and routers.

Spiritual Warfare for Women by Leighann McCoy

Spiritual Warfare for Women: Winning the Battle for Your Home, Family, and FriendsIn McCoy’s book, she talks about spiritual warfare and how it impacts Christian women.  However, rather than focusing on the warfare, her primary purpose is to encourage women to spend their time focusing on good (rather than evil).

McCoy has a great analogy comparing training for marines versus training for life as a Christian. Marine training is an intense, regimented process whereas Christians may be more complacent in their preparation to stand against spiritual battles.   It’s important to always be ready, knowing who you are as Christian rather than waiting for things that may happen.

Differentiate or Die by Jack Trout & Steven Rivkin

Differentiate or Die: Survival in Our Era of Killer CompetitionYour company isn't the only game in town, so how can you be competitive and stay in business in this economic environment?  Trout & Rivken's book is about the importance of differentiating yourself from your competitors.  Trying to be all things to all people is a mistake.  Instead, find a niche and focus your efforts there.

Battlefield of the Mind by Joyce Meyer

Battlefield of the Mind: Winning the Battle in Your MindYou are what you think.  Regardless of your religious beliefs, we all know that what we think about impacts the way we act and feel.   I doubt anyone can argue with the power of positive thinking.  In “Battlefield of the Mind”, Meyer teaches readers how to change the way they view things.

She doesn’t present herself as someone who’s completely conquered negative thinking; rather, she share personal stories of her past challenges and areas where she continues to struggle.

Al Capone by Nate Hendley

Al Capone: Chicago's King of Crime I love books that get right into the story, rather than spending the first half setting up the background.  Hendley’s book on Capone did just that.  He gave some detail about Capone’s family and upbringing before moving quickly into the story about Capone himself.

The book is filled with facts and dates about his life, and does a nice job of providing the history as a novel.  The details don’t interrupt the flow of the story.

Jesus Niece by Sidni Louise Myles

Chapter 8 Jesus' NieceJesus Niece is a a short, easy-to-read book for all ages.  In it, Myles shares personal stories of family history in a short, almost poetic style.  She also includes a CD with the stories told in her book.

Each chapter title has a good message, such as “just keep walking”, and “fear in perspective”.  I would have liked to see  a takeaway, or life lesson learned at the end of each short section that wraps up these main themes.  Also, there was a change font sizes which seemed to indicate a new part of this story; my personal preference is to have one font throughout.

To learn more about Sidni, you can contact her through her web-site.

Note:  I received this book for free from the author.
